The Catepillars are falling!!!

I am at Asilomar, Pacific Grove for a study retreat.  And I am really studying.  Maybe I'll see the ocean tomorrow.   It just so happens that it is the season of the Oak Moth.   Here's why I know.   When we first got here, caterpillars, little ones, were falling from the trees.   They are about a half-inch long and about as wide as a pencil lead.   Nothing dangerous about them but its freaky to go out walking and having these worm-like things fall on your head and clothes.   So they tell us that these caterpillar drop to the ground grow bigger and yes uglier and then caccoon and then the oak moth.   I know God loves diversity and all that but these little caterpillars are annoying and ugly and I don't want to see the moths!!!  I know you are curious so here are some pictures I took this afternoon, some are a bit blurry because they don't stay still as they are swinging in the wind, here's one on a rope and the ones on the bench have been on the ground a few days and now are getting bigger and darker.  YUCK!!!

Twenty-Five Years!!!

August 28, 1982 was the day Joel and I were married.   We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary with a party given by our children, with Deanne as the supreme event planner.  The event was in Sacramento.  The city where Joel and I met, married, and had our children.   It was a grand day with friends and family. Evelyn and Analise danced for the group.  Lauren put together a slide show of Joel and I from then and now. Folks had to complete a quiz about Joel and I.   One of teh questions.  What would Sarah and Joel do if they won the Lotto?  Joel wrote the answer:  Divorce because we wouldn't be able to agree on what to do.  He is so right, not the Divorce but we have managed to stay together with the blessing of God and the ability to disagree and still live with each other.  We probably would agree on some things about the Lotto money, but if we had a million dollars how bad could the argument be?   I am blessed by the presences of the love, caring and respect I receive from Joel.  He has infinite patience with me!  We are blessed with a wonderful family and friends.  ThankImg_3187s be to God.   HeImg_3182_2re are some pictures from that day:

Materialism!! Leaving Cars where you crash them!!!

The problem isn't materialism as such. Rather it is the underlying assumption that full satisfaction can arise from gratifying the senses alone. Unlike animals whose quest for happiness is restricted to survival and to the immediate gratification of sensory desires, we human beings have the capacity to experience happiness at a deeper level which, when achieved, can overwhelm unhappy experiences.  -His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Whoever that bear was that left his Lamborghini on the side of the road after he crashed it, must hae more cars somewhere else.    Or I suppose that the bear was too something to figure out that one does not leave one's litter on the road.

The Dalai Lama says that materialism is not the problem as such but our question to satisfy our senses.  Our overwhelming need for instant gratification in our relationslhips, jobs, careers and play stresses and exhausts us!!! Still, hHow does one crash a car, leave it, and doesn't expect to be called on it?  So I am sure there is talk that he left because he didn't want to be tested for drugs and alcohol.   For whatever reason, which sense did the lamborghini satisfy?

This is a mother's lament.   Didn't anyone tell the bear to pick up after himself when he makes a mess?

Fundamentalists vs Most everything I believe!

Recently, there have been a slew of e-mails being passed around that are anti-Muslim, expressing strong and very prejudicial opinions about “why Muslims can’t really be Americans” and other very bigoted sentiments.  I replied to the parishioner who sent it this way:  I am not including the questions because they are just wrong but you can sense what the question is by the responses.   Below are my response and Pastor Barbara's response..  Pastor Barbara's responses is very good.   Barbara's DMin was on fundamentalism and her knowledge is amazing!

Sarah's Response
Really, the label should be Arab American,  We don’t go around saying we are Christian Americans

We don’t do Buddhist-American.    Muslims, Jews and Christians are all the people of the one book with differing views of God,  So can a Jew be an American?

I don’t know but yes this is an extremist point of view.   A Muslim was just elected to Congress.    He’s an American.

Oh Well, if I were in charge.

Pastor Barbara's Response

Recently, Pastor Barbara replied to one of these e-mails, point by point with the following information. The original e-mail is not included as it was not seen as necessary, but know that these numbers correspond to specific comments in the original e-mail.

“There are fundamentalist Muslims, just as there are fundamentalist Christians. These can be extremists, as we’ve seen.  But they in no way represent the majority of Muslims.

Yes, there are Christians and Muslims who believe that people who do not share their faith beliefs will go to hell.  This is not, however, true of all religions. Buddhists, Hindus and many other religions (native American religions, for example) do not have these exclusivist ideas.

In response to the e-mail stating that Muslims can’t really be Americans:

1. Theologically, WE (as much as Muslims) should not have the strong loyalty to our country that many have because WE are supposed to have allegiance to one God only – not a country, but God.  We are asked to love everyone, just as Jesus modeled for the Jews stepping beyond their loyalty to the Nation of Israel by loving Samaritans, and Syrophoenicians, we are called to do the same. By the way, the word “Allah” just means “God” – it is not a “moon God” but the same Judeo-Christian-Islamic God that we believe in.  Muslims use the Old Testament just as we do – they have the same roots as we do, with Abraham as their founder – their God is not a different God and is certainly not a “moon god.”

2. Religiously, no other religion is accepted by OUR God accept OUR God – see all of our Old Testament which goes on and on about not worshipping Baal or “any other god”.  Why does this mean Muslims or Christians or any of us can’t be American? Jews and Christians alike who also use this Old Testament stuff about accepting no other gods are Americans, so how is this different for Muslims?

3. Scripturally, again, we too are supposed to put nothing and no –one before our God, the same as the Muslims.

4. Geographically, while the Muslims may pray towards

Mecca

, the Old Testament roots our home (or at least the home of the Jews) as

Jerusalem

. But Jewish loyalty to

America

is not being questioned.

5.  Socially, Christian fundamentalists also are “forbidden” to make friends with non-Christians. This is a fundamentalist thing, not an Islamic thing.  I have several Islamic friends – they have no problems being friends with all sorts of people.

6. Again, political allegiance is not based on whether you are Islamic or not but whether or not you are a FUNDAMENTALIST or not.  Christian fundamentalists teach loyalty to

America

and

Israel

.  Non-fundamentalist Christians teach LOVE FOR ALL PEOPLE ACROSS BOUNDARIES.  This is true of Islamic people too – many believe in love for all people across all boundaries.

7. Domestically, not just Islamic writings, but our Old Testament also teaches that women are to be submissive (and actually, Paul also says women are to be submissive! – that’s NEW Testament stuff).  And in our Old Testament, many people have many wives: Abraham had his slave-concubine Hagar (is that really better than having several wives?), Solomon had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines (1st Kings 11:3), etc.  While we’re on the subject of bad religious practices, our Old Testament states, for example, in Exodus 21: 20-21 (NRSV translation) that a slaveowner can beat his female or male slaves to death as long as it takes them at least a day to die!!  Proverbs 23:13-14 encourages pounding on children with a rod. There are things in many religious texts that should be suspect. Just as we suspect many of the Old Testament practices, many Muslims are also cautious about some of the practices mentioned in the Quran.

8. Muslims believes the Bible to be corrupt?  Really? Muslims believe in the Old Testament.  And it’s not actually true that the constitution of the

United States

is based on Biblical principles: that is again, a myth of Christian Fundamentalists.  In fact, our constitution was based on the basic principle of separation of church and state!  Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson especially advocated religious freedom (All of whom were theists and stopped considering themselves Christian!!).  What little of religion slips into the constitution is based, again, on the Old Testament – something Muslims also use.

9. The Quran actually teaches peace – the God of the Quran is a peaceful God, in contrast, again, to the God of the Old Testament who wipes out whole groups of people (the Canaanites for example) simply because they are not Jewish.

Take for example, Father Chacour’s school in Ibillin, Gallilee. It is a

school

of

Christians

, Jews, Druze, and yes, Muslims who choose to come together across all boundaries to work for peace and community across faiths.  If “Muslims” all really believed the things in this e-mail there would be no Muslims at this school or at any of the many, many interfaith gatherings across the world (and indeed, locally – if you are interested I can connect you with one!) seeking peace, love and unity between all peoples.

I finish by leaving you with another of our scriptures: again, one we share with the Muslims: Exodus 22:21 – “You shall not wrong or oppress a resident alien, for you were aliens in the

land

of

Egypt

.”  I think there are a lot of people who need to remember this.  We are all aliens in this land, all immigrants originally (with a very few exceptions), and we should be very careful about whom we attack and shun and criticize.  Every person is a unique person who cannot be boxed as “Muslim” or “Christian” or anything else – we should know this, we who are so often “boxed” and judged as exclusivist or closed-minded because we are “Christians” - many assume we are extremist, they assume we are fundamentalists, though again, most Christians are not fundamentalists.

The Doves are Back!

The weeks before Lauren's wedding, a pair of doves made a nest in rafters of our porch.  Everytime we left the house we could see the dove sitting on the nest and sometimes her partner was keeping her company.  Every day we watched and then we saw two little chicks and they grew so that Mom had to sit outside of the nest.   The day after the wedding, the chicks flew away and so did their parents.  I thought how interesting that they left the day after the wedding, was it a sign that Lauren had grown up and flew out of the nest?  They were interesting to watch.  Everytime we opened the door they sat perfectly still as if we couldn't see them if they were still.   I was sad to see them go.
Img_3146
But yesteday, I saw a momma dove sitting on the nest that was left behind with her partner sitting right next to her.  They came back! Of course, I can't be sure that it was the same birds. Do doves have identifying marks?   Do you think doves have an agreement about used nests?   I wonder if their coming back means anything.   I know Lauren and Beadle aren't coming back soon.   Kevin hasn't left yet.  Bruce and Robin just stayed a few days.   Maybe it just means that our porch will always be home for them.   Who knows?  But can't wait to see the chicks!

Tourists!!!

The other night, Joel and I were looking for a parking space in downtown San Francisco.  We ended up driving in the Tenderloin, not an inviting part of town with colorful and happy people caused by drugs and alcohol, the smell of urine and sidewalk decorations of bottles, trash, and "poop" and generally not a place one goes unprepared to meet a more diffent type of lifestyle.

Back to looking for a parking spot,  we turned the corner in our car, we were in the lane next to the sidewalk and there was this couple who chose not to walk on the sidewalk probably because of the decorations and colorful, happy people.  So they walked right in front of us in the middle of the lane.   The Christian thing to do was to point out to them they were lost and direct them to the "safe" part of downtown San Francisco but....they ignored us as we drove right up to them and acted as if we and the cars behind us didn't exist.  When we got to the intersection, they went into the croswalk, stood in the middle of it, looked left and right then started walking back where they came from.  All I could do was pray!!!  Pray that we wouldn't hit them and pray that they had the good sense to ask someone for directions!!!!

Oh, how did I know they were tourists?  They had shorts on and no jackets!!!

Making GOoD Choices

MAKING GOoD CHOICES

When my children left for school or  I dropped them off, I told them, “I love you and make good choices!”   Recently, I had a conversation with a young woman who had questions about a “purity ring” (which is a ring that is given to a girl to promise not to have sex until marriage-this is a simple explanation). She also asked other questions about relationships and girl stuff that she couldn’t talk to her adult about. This conversation moved me to facilitate a series of classes on “Making GOoD Choices” – Frank conversations about Faith, Relationships, Friends, School, Health and Family will be encouraged.

The classes will be held on Fridays from 6:00 to 9:00. The class will be for girls 12 years and older. Parent permission is required before attending. The girls will have to sign a covenant of behavior in the classes (i.e. no gossiping, laughing at others, coming on time, etc.) The classes will begin on September 28 and the last class will be October 25. At the last class, the girls will be given covenant rings. The rings that will remind them that making choices involves God and God’s leading in their lives. It may be a “NO” ring, to drugs, alcohol, gossip, sex, but most importantly it will remind the wearer of the covenant they made to the group and God through prayer and conversations with other adults in their lives about making  GOochoices.

On October 19-2 the girls and adult chaperones will be attending a Women of Faith Gathering focused for teen girls. The conference will be inSacramento The cost including a hotel and meals will be approximately $80-$100. If you can sponsor a young woman, please mail your check to Bethel,  marked: Making GOoD choices.

When they leave the nest...

Empty nesters, that's what Joel and I will never be because I keep bringing the kids back home or at least my granddaughters. Ava just spent a few nights with us.  Abby and Annie have spent the week with us.   Bruce, Robin and all the girls stayed with us a few  more nights until their new place was ready.   It was great to have them all in the house with kevin and his friend Erin.  I am blessed to have children that I really want to be with and,  most of the time, they want to be with me.

I had a Norman Rockwell moment the other night.  Erin was working a crossword puzzle and it was difficult.  Evelyn, my 11 year old eldest granddaughter, believed she could help.  Then Bruce came up with a word that had puzzling clues and before you knew it we were gathered around the table giving suggestions and laughing at the same time.   Even the little ones, Abby and Annie, thought they could be of help. So there we were all eight of us trying to figure out a crossword puzzle and I don't like to do crosswords.  But I love being with my family and  observing these kind events.  It is  a reminder that I am blessed.

So now we don't have the additional five bodies in our house and it seems a bit quiet!! Wait!!! They left their pet rats!!!!

It's not right....

The other day my son, Bruce, posted a Bethel event on Facebook.  Facebook is like Myspace.com here's the lilnk http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=4954521447 or  Facebook - Bethel Event when discussing this around the table, it was suggested that I go on Facebook.  The comment then from the younger one's at the table, "That's not right."  "Facebook was meant for college kids and not for old people!"  I am not on facebook yet but when i get enough nerve I may be.  Bruce is on it and he is considered old, so maybe its time ancient folks like me join up with the youngin's and use technology to get to know folks or for folks to get to know you!!
